Indigo Shibori Workshop June 18th - 23rd 2023
Join Anna Keene on the tiny Dutch island of Saba in the Caribbean for a 5 day indigo dyeing adventure. You will spend 5 nights at Juliana’s Hotel in Windwardside, just a short walk from shops and restaurants. You will harvest and process wild indigo growing on the property, hike to the ruins of indigo processing vats, learn many different traditional and not so traditional Shibori techniques and dye using a hydrosulfite vat. The Studio is located on the hotel grounds which provides you with 24/7 access if you need to work on projects after workshop hours.
Workshop hours will be from 9 to 3 each day with lunches and dinners out as a group or on your own. This will provide you with plenty of time to explore the island or just relax by the pool. During the workshop you will harvest and process raw indigo suffructosa into a usable form, learn several traditional Shibori techniques including clamping, tying, wrapping, and stitching and some unconventional ones with hair pins and marbles or odd shapes. You will learn how to create a “hydros” vat. Anna uses this type of vat for ease and consistency and because thiox has such a short shelf life here. The hike to the old indigo processing tanks is a moderate one. Good trainers or hiking boots are recommended. On this day we will start early at 8 and have a sack lunch from Tropics while enjoying some of the more stark terrain of the island. All supplies will be included. You will come away from the workshop with a rayon pareo/sarong wrap, a rayon scarf and a cotton canvas market bag. Swatches of rayon, silk, and cotton plus a piece of handwoven fabric will be yours to experiment on. You may choose to bring one small piece or garment of your own to dye. Just make sure it is a natural fiber. Extra items such as bandanas, napkins, and aprons can be purchased at the workshop. |
